Dig into gardening season at GP Grows: Dig It on May 9

The City of Grande Prairie invites residents to dig in and pick up free gardening supplies at GP Grows: Dig It on Saturday, May 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at Keyera Place, located at 9401 Park Road.

This free, drop-in event provides seed potatoes, seed onions, bare-root strawberry plants and triple-mix soil to support home gardening and encourage residents to explore growing their own food. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis while quantities last. Participants are asked to bring their own pail or container, up to a maximum of 20 gallons.

City of Grande Prairie reminds residents of annual elm pruning ban

As spring conditions return, the City of Grande Prairie is reminding residents that the annual elm pruning ban is in effect from April 1 to September 30 across Alberta.

The pruning restriction is in place to help prevent the spread of Dutch elm disease (DED), a serious disease that affects elm trees. DED is spread by elm bark beetles, which are active during warmer months and are attracted to freshly cut or damaged elm wood.

Pest control operations begin in May

The City of Grande Prairie begins annual pest control operations in May 2026 to help manage noxious weeds, insects and plant diseases on City-owned land within municipal boundaries. Work continues through October, weather permitting.

All products used are registered with Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency and are approved for these purposes.

City of Grande Prairie updates seasonal gravel road bans

Effective Saturday, April 4, 2026, the City of Grande Prairie is updating seasonal weight restrictions on gravel roads within city limits to be in effect 24 hours a day.

Previously in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the gravel road bans now apply around the clock to better protect road integrity during the spring thaw. All affected gravel roads are limited to 75% axle weight at all times until further notice.

Spring starts with a clean sweep: City Scrub returns this April

Grande Prairie is ready to roll up its sleeves as City Scrub returns April 1–30, inviting residents to take 20 minutes to help clean up litter across the community.

From neighbourhood streets to parks and public spaces, City Scrub is a simple way for individuals, families, schools, businesses and community groups to come together and show pride in where they live.

Celebrate, explore and grow together at the City and County of Grande Prairie Earth Day event on April 25

Spring into action and join the City and County of Grande Prairie for a family-friendly Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 25 at the Bowes at Bonnetts Energy Centre from noon to 4 p.m.

This free community event brings people together to celebrate the environment and discover simple ways to reduce our impact. Attendees can also enter to win one of two compact Jetson electric bikes, each valued at $700 and including a lock and helmet.
