Violation Ticket Resolution

• Option 1: Voluntary Payment Option

  If you have been given a Voluntary Payment Option you may pay the Voluntary Payment amount on or before the court appearance date indicated on the ticket. 

  Payment in advance of the court date can be processed through the mail by submitting a copy of the violation ticket along with a cheque or money order payable to the Government of Alberta to:

  Grande Prairie, AB T8V 2H4

  Payment may also be made in person at any Provincial Court of Alberta.

  By paying the voluntary payment amount you are pleading guilty to the charge and you do not need to appear in court on the court appearance date.  If your payment is not received on or before the court appearance date, a warrant may be issued for your arrest.

  Where authorized, the voluntary payment option includes a victim surcharge.  The victim surcharge is used to assist victims of crime in the Province of Alberta.

  If you fail to respond by the date and time indicated on the violation ticket, or or if you plead not guilty and fail to appear in Court in person or by agent on your trial date, you will be deemed not to dispute the charge and will be convicted in your absence without a hearing and charged a late payment charge of $20 or 20% of the voluntary payment amount, whichever is greater.

• Option 2 Plead Not Guilty

  Via Mail

  By signing and dating the statement "I wish to plead not guilty" affixed to the reverse side of the violation ticket.  Submit the statement and ticket via registered mail to:

  Ensure you make a copy of the ticket for your records and keep your post office receipt as proof of mailing.

  In Person

  You may appear before a Justice at the appearance address and date indicated on the ticket.  

  By submitting a not guilty plea, a trial date will be set and notice will be sent to you via regular mail to your address listed on the violation ticket unless an alternate address is indicated with your statement.  If you do not receive notice of the trial by ordinary mail with a reasonable time, you must contact the Court Office by calling toll free 310-0000 or by contacting www.albertacourts.ab.ca to obtain the trial date.

  If you fail to respond by the date and time indicated on the violation ticket, or or if you plead not guilty and fail to appear in Court in person or by agent on your trial date, you will be deemed not to dispute the charge and will be convicted in your absence without a hearing and charged a late payment charge of $20 or 20% of the voluntary payment amount, whichever is greater.

• Option 3 Plead Guilty and Request Time to Pay

  In Person

  Appear before a Justice at the appearance address and date as indicated on the ticket.  Ask the Justice of the Peace what options may be available to you.  

  If you fail to respond by the date and time indicated on the violation ticket, or or if you plead not guilty and fail to appear in Court in person or by agent on your trial date, you will be deemed not to dispute the charge and will be convicted in your absence without a hearing and charged a late payment charge of $20 or 20% of the voluntary payment amount, whichever is greater.
