As spring conditions return, the City of Grande Prairie is reminding residents that the annual elm pruning ban is in effect from April 1 to September 30 across Alberta.

The pruning restriction is in place to help prevent the spread of Dutch elm disease (DED), a serious disease that affects elm trees. DED is spread by elm bark beetles, which are active during warmer months and are attracted to freshly cut or damaged elm wood.

Protecting Grande Prairie’s urban forest supports a healthy, resilient and vibrant community. Trees contribute to air quality, provide shade and support local ecosystems throughout the city.

While elm pruning is not permitted during the ban, residents may see City crews maintaining other trees this time of year, including work on green ash and other species as part of seasonal operations.

The City continues to monitor and maintain trees year-round through inspections, scheduled maintenance and response to priority concerns.

This work supports the City’s Urban Forest Strategy, which focuses on maintaining a healthy, diverse and sustainable tree canopy across Grande Prairie.

Tree concerns can be reported through AccessGP by dialing 311 or online at access.cityofgp.com.
