Residential Snow Clearing

Residential Snow Clearing

Residential Snow Clearing

The City of Grande Prairie's residential snow plowing program is a contracted service that occurs in two-week rotations, only when declared by the City.

What initiates/triggers the service?

Residential snow clearing is triggered when declared by the City and occurs:

  • When there is a significant build-up of snow.
  • From Monday to Friday.
  • From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • In 2-week rotations.

Before starting a two-week round of residential plowing, City staff will consider current and upcoming weather conditions.

Week A and Week B

The City has assigned neighbourhoods to a "Week A" and "Week B" schedule when residential snow clearing is declared to increase the accuracy of the information provided. Residential snow clearing still occurs in a two-week rotation, and the snow clearing day assigned to a neighbourhood remains the same.

Parking on Residential Roads

When a round of residential snow clearing is declared by the City, crews will clear all residential roads (week A and week B) within a two-week rotation.  Removing vehicles and other obstacles from the road before snow clearing is activated helps crews clear areas safely, quickly and reduces the chances of damaging property. If there are too many vehicles on the street, crews may be required to skip a street and try again the following week.

Please note: The sides of the road on residential streets are used for windrow storage. If there is a windrow on the side of the road, residents may not park beside the windrow. Residents may park in their driveways, find alternate parking or shovel the windrow out themselves to park on the road.

Temporary Parking Bans in Residential Areas

The City is placing "temporary parking ban" signage in residential neighbourhoods during rotations.

The signs are placed 24 hours before residential snow clearing begins in a specific neighbourhood.
