For children under five years old, you may need to find childcare. There are several options depending on your child’s needs and age. Sometimes there can be a waitlist, so begin looking for childcare ahead of time if possible. There may also be childcare facilities close to your home or work, and some schools also have childcare programs.

You may be eligible for government financial childcare support like the federal Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and the Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB). Search canada.ca/en/services/benefits/finder for more information.
If you have moved to Grande Prairie with children who are between 5 and 18 years old, they can attend a school without tuition fees in one of the four school districts. Each school year starts in September and ends in June.
Each school district offers unique and specialized possibilities, such as French Immersion, Francophone Education, Montessori programming and more. Contact the school districts and they will help you decide the best placement for your child.

DID YOU KNOW: Free busing may be available to and from school. Please check with the school when registering. The school your children attend is usually determined by your address and/or the type of programming you choose. If you want to enroll your child in a school, contact the school districts and they will help you decide the best placement for your child.

HELPFUL TIPS: You may be able to schedule visits or tours to get a feel for the school environment, facilities and staff before you register your child as a student. You will need to gather important documents, such as birth certificates, immunization records and proof of residence to enroll your child in school. If English is not your child's first language, ask about learning support services.
GPFES is a community organization dedicated to supporting families and individuals in the Grande Prairie region. They provide a variety of free programs and services aimed at promoting family well-being, education and personal development. These programs may include parenting workshops, early childhood education, literacy programs and support groups.
