Safe & Secure Housing
In Alberta, there are laws to protect you as a renter. The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) outlines the rules for both landlords and tenants. Visit alberta.ca/rights-and-responsibilities to learn more.
Here are some important things to know:
- Landlords must give written notice at least 24 hours before they enter your rental home (unless it’s an emergency).
- Landlords must give written notice if they plan to raise the rent.
- Your security deposit can’t be more than one month’s rent at the time that you move in.
- Do not send money until you meet the landlord and view the rental unit. This will help you avoid online rental scams.
- If you want to move out, check your rental agreement to see how you need to notify your landlord.
- If your landlord tries to evict you for any reason, make sure to read about your tenant rights before taking action.
Your Right to a Safe Home
Your home should be safe and healthy to live in. This means having:
- Enough space for everyone living there (not overcrowded).
- Heat, clean drinking water and a working toilet and shower.
- Clean living conditions with no mold and good air flow in cooking areas.
- Safe and working electricity, locks on windows and doors, smoke alarms and windows in bedrooms (in case of fire).
- No pests (like mice or insects).
- Regular garbage and recycling collection.
If something isn’t right in your home, talk to your landlord. If you are still concerned, visit open.alberta.ca/publications/minimum-housing-and-health-standards to learn about housing safety standards in Alberta.
