City Council highlights for the meeting held December 2, 2024

Elections Bylaw C-1480

Council gave second and third reading to Bylaw C-1480, being the Elections Bylaw.

Volunteer Awards 2024 

Council awarded the Bill Bowes Volunteer Organization Award and the George Repka Outstanding Achievement Award. The recipients will be recognized on International Volunteer Day, Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the Annual International Volunteer Day Celebration Breakfast.

Proclamations

City Council proclaimed November 24-30 National Addictions Awareness Week in Grande Prairie.

The week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the impacts of addiction, highlight supports available in the community and work together to reduce stigma and support recovery.

Tax Recovery Sale

Council approved the 2023 Tax Recovery Sale to take place Friday, March 14, 2025 by public auction and established the reserve bids.

City Council highlights for the meeting held November 4, 2024

Delegations

Daniel Haggerty attended as a delegate for information on the City’s public consultation process for rezoning and land development, specifically in Arbour Hills. Council received the presentation as information and tabled it for discussion during Delegation Business.

Council approved the City of Grande Prairie Meeting Calendar for Council and Standing Committees for the period of October 21, 2024, to October 27, 2025, as presented.

Delegations

Jenny Stegmeier requested an update on the soccer dome. Council received the presentation as information.

The Grande Prairie Climbing Association attended as a delegate to request a letter of support from City Council towards building a new climbing wall. Council directed Mayor Clayton to write a letter of support for the Grande Prairie Climbing Association.

Upcoming meetings

Council approved Standing Committee meetings to take place on October 29 at 9 a.m. and a City Council meeting to take place on November 4 at 3 p.m.

Mayor Jackie Clayton proclaimed October 20-26 Small Business Week in Grande Prairie.

Our small business sector is one of the greatest strengths of our local economy and the City of Grande Prairie is proud to support our business owners and dedicated employees who make our community a vibrant and rewarding place to be.

Delegations

Cory Gundersen and Sean Leonard presented to Council in regards to tendered towing companies.

Statement from Grande Prairie Mayor: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an annual occasion to reflect on the history of residential schools, walk together on a path to reconciliation and deliver on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls-to-Action. 

The day also aligns with Orange Shirt Day, which acknowledges the personal and inter-generational impacts of residential schools.

Flags at all City facilities are being lowered in observance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Proclamations

Mayor Clayton proclaimed this week as National Forest Week and Rail Safety Week.

Each year National Forest Week is celebrated across Canada by many individuals and organizations. Forests are fundamental to our economy, culture, traditions and history – and to our future. 

Rail Safety Week educates and informs the public about rail safety and reminds people of ways to reduce the number of avoidable fatalities and injuries cause by incidents involving trains and citizens.

Festival of Trees Sponsorship

Council approved $10,000 in sponsorship to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation for Festival of Trees.

Bear Creek Dam Engagement Plan

Council amended the Bear Creek Engagement Plan to allow for Council decision to be made in Spring 2026. Council approved the Bear Creek Dam Engagement Plan as amended. 

Prescription to Get Active Membership

Council approved Administration to pursue membership into the Prescription to Get Active not-for-profit corporation.

City Council highlights for the meeting held August 26, 2024

Delegations

The Grande Prairie & District Golden Age Centre presented to Council in regards to expansion of their facility.

Heena Angral presented to Council to express thanks for their support of the First Chariot Festival of Grande Prairie and to start discussions for next year.

The Salvation Army presented to Council with a funding request for a capital commitment to assist the Salvation Army in purchasing a new building to expand its food bank warehouse and community services operations.
