City Council highlights for the meeting held July 15, 2024

Delegations

Rick Murray presented an update for Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Boreal Wetland Centre. The building had an open house, infrastructure improvements as well as various events and activities to improve community awareness. Council accepted the presentation as information.

Reports

Council approved the sale of 11007 106 Street to Rising Above Ministries for $1, subject to conditions of the Offer of Purchase and rescinded the motion to extend the existing lease with Rising Above Ministries at that property for an additional 32 years.

Reports

Council gave first reading to Bylaw C-1475, the Maskwa Medical Center Borrowing Bylaw and Bylaw C-1476, the Maskwa Medical Center Lending Bylaw.

Board Appointments

Council appointed Bobbi Dawson as Chair of the Grande Prairie Airport Commission for a term ending December 31, 2024. Council appointed Councillor Leanne Beaupre as the County of Grande Prairie representative for the Grande Prairie Public Library Board, effective January 1, 2024 to October 30, 2025. 

City Council Highlights for the meeting held May 21, 2024

Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Endorsement

Council endorsed Mayor Clayton to stand for election on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Board of Directors for the period starting June 2024 and ending June 2025. 

Council will assume all costs associated with Mayor Clayton attending FCM’s Board of Director meetings.

Decommissioning Playgrounds

Council passed an amendment to the Playground Strategy to add criteria for Decommissioning Playgrounds.

Mayor Jackie Clayton proclaimed May 6-10 Economic Development Week in Grande Prairie.
For 50 years, Economic Development Alberta has been leading the industry in supporting communities’ economic well-being and quality of life through creation, retention and expansion of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Mayor Statement On May 5th, The National Day Of Awareness For Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, And Two-Spirit People In Canada

On May 5, the City of Grande Prairie joins the rest of the country in recognizing the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2+) in Canada, or Red Dress Day.

We take time today to honor the lives lost and impacted due to colonial violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people and remember our commitments to Truth and Reconciliation for addressing the disproportional challenges Indigenous communities face. 

City Council Highlights for the meeting held April 22, 2024

2024 Weed Inspector Appointments Officer Appointment 

Council appointed Barb Welander, Michelle Benning, Emma Kimble and Mitchel Gorman as Weed Inspectors under the Weed Control Act of Alberta for the 2024 season. 

Council appointed the Operational Services Committee as an Independent Appeals Panel for 2024.

Grande Prairie Stompede Sponsorship 

Council approved $15,000 in sponsorship to the Grande Prairie Stompede; $10,000 in cash sponsorship, $5,000 in in-kind sponsorship through transit services.

Community Microgrant Funding Applications Now Open

Applications are now open for the City of Grande Prairie’s Community Microgrant Funding.

The Community Microgrant is intended to foster connections and pride in the community through the funding of gatherings, projects, and celebrations of arts and culture. It provides individuals and groups with funding up to a maximum amount of $1,500. 

This new funding stream was developed through a consolidation of existing grants to better improve accessibility of funding and take a progressive approach to grants based on community trends.
