• Abandoned Vehicles

  • A vehicle can be parked for a maximum of 72 hours on any residential roadway
  • After 72 consecutive hours, the vehicle is considered to be abandoned and may be removed
• Barricade Applications

  Anyone can request to temporarily block parking in special cases. The requesting person must submit an application at least three business days in advance of the request. Complete the Barricade Application Form following the instructions provided.

• Prohibited Parking

  A person shall not stop or park a vehicle:

  • On a sidewalk or boulevard or in a way that obstructs or encroaches on a sidewalk
  • Within 5 meters from a stop sign or yield sign
  • Within 1.5 meters from a private road, driveway or access to a garage
  • On a roadway with a snow windrow
  • On a designated snow route when a parking ban has been declared
  • In a restricted residential parking area without an authorized permit hung from the vehicle's rear view mirror
  • A commercial vehicle exceeding 11,794 kg and/or 8.0 meters in overall length on a private driveway or roadway other than a truck route
  • Within 5 meters from a crosswalk
  • At any place where a sign does not allow stopping or parking
  • In such a manner to block, obstruct, impede or hinder pedestrian or vehicle traffic
  • On a roadway with an expired licence plate
  • In an alley, unless a sign allows parking
  • In any manner other than both right wheels of the vehicle not more than 0.5 meters from the right curb
  • Or detach a trailer from a vehicle and park it on a roadway (this does not include a legally parked travel trailer
• Residential Permit Parking

  The City of Grande Prairie has implemented Residential Permit Parking in the VLA, and Avondale neighbourhoods.

  Permit Parking is in effect Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 hours. Permits must be displayed on the rear view mirror of a vehicle parked in the permit areas during applicable hours.

  Vehicles parked in a permit area without displaying a valid authorized permit are subject to a fine as per the City's Traffic Bylaw (C-1166) Section 24.1

Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE)

• ATE Locations are approved by the RCMP using these guidelines

  • ATE speed enforcement is restricted to school zones, playground zones, and construction zones within municipalities.
  • Intersection Safety Devices (ISDs) may only enforce red-light infractions, on roadways which are not a provincial highway or connector routes, provided that an intersection meets one of the following criteria:
    • The area has a higher collision frequency rate relative to similar areas or intersections when comparing over a three-year period.
    • The area has a higher collision frequency for injury and fatal collisions relative to similar areas when comparing over a three-year period.
    • The area has had at least five collisions resulting in injuries or fatalities in the last three years.
    • The area has had at least 15 property damage, injury, or fatal collisions in the past three years.
    • The use of ATE in an area has resulted in reduced collisions or reduced injury and fatal collisions over a three-year period. This criterion can only be used to maintain existing locations.
  • ATE is not permitted on provincial highways or connectors.
    
    • Notwithstanding this prohibition, ATE is permitted in construction zones and school or playground zones located on provincial highways or connectors.
  • Existing locations shall be reassessed and tested every two years, and documented an ATE Location Assessment Form, if within a designated zone, or through the provision of follow up evidence demonstrating that the use of ATE in an area or intersection has resulted in a reduced collision rate of overall collisions, and/or reduced rate of injury and fatal collisions.
  • Mobile Photo Enforcement Operators are Peace Officers while on-duty.
    • The training and appointment of the Operators is authorized by the Province of Alberta (Justice and Solicitor General).
  • ATE vehicles are permitted to park on boulevards, shoulders and no parking areas under the authority of the Traffic Safety Act and the Traffic Bylaw. The City’s preference would be for them not to utilize these areas for parking but for some locations this is the safest approach. Similar provisions exist for utility workers.

FAQ about Photo Enforcement Tickets

• How will vehicle owners be notified of a photo enforcement violation?

  The images capturing the violation are reviewed and verified before a violation notice is prepared and mailed to the registered owner of the licence plate. The process can take one to two weeks, but is usually completed within days (much quicker than the previous process).

• What options do I have if I receive a photo enforcement violation ticket?

  The violation ticket will set out options for the Registered Owner of the vehicle captured in the violation. Options include:

  • Voluntary in-person payment of the fine at a Registry Office or Provincial Court
  • Payment by mail or online
  • Appear before a Justice at the address on the ticket (Grande Prairie Provincial Court) to plead guilty or not guilty
  • Plead not guilty by mailing the notice as per the instructions on the ticket
• If I elect to pay my violation ticket where can I pay?

Winter Season Driving Safety

  • Ensure your vehicle is clear of frost and snow to provide the best visibility possible. Keep your windshield and headlights clear of snow and ice.
  • Speed limits are for optimal driving conditions, and reduce speed when ice, snow, and slush are present.
  • Leave additional space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you to allow for slippery stops.
  • Keep your headlights on all the time- do not rely on daytime running lights.
  • Low beam lights are more effective than high beam lights in fog or heavy snow conditions.
  • Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. Leave at least five metres when parking near a stop sign, yield sign, or marked crosswalk. 
  • Icy road conditions can prevent a quick stop. Maintain a safe speed and be aware of pedestrian activity around you.
  • Never pass a vehicle at a crosswalk.
  • Remember to stay alert and exercise caution when driving in low light areas or when driving on roads in areas where wildlife often frequents.
