City Council highlights for the meeting held January 5, 2026

Delegations 

Frank Skolly requested that Council look into replacing and updating the Grande Prairie Cenotaph. 

Council directed Administration to bring a report back to the appropriate Standing Committee outlining options to support replacing and enhancing the Cenotaph, including discussion of potential alternative locations. 

Public Member Appointments

Council appointed Jeff Keddie to the Community Knowledge Campus Advisory Committee for a term ending December 31, 2028.

Council approves the 2026 Budget: Balancing today’s needs with tomorrow’s growth

Grande Prairie City Council has approved the 2026 Budget, balancing affordability and quality of life to support service delivery while preparing for a strong tomorrow.

Like many municipalities across Canada, Grande Prairie is facing challenging economic times alongside the needs of a growing community. The focus for the 2026 Budget is to invest in the services residents rely on while balancing future need.

Records Management System Selection and Implementation

Council approved the Grande Prairie Police Service to enter into a 10-year contract with Axon for the Records Management System (RMS) as well as the transfer of $643,363.25 from the RMS Capital funding to the GPPS 2026 Operating Budget.

Grande Prairie Public Library Board Appointment

Council appointed Councillor Brian Peterson as the County of Grande Prairie representative for the Grande Prairie Public Library Board, for a term ending October 19, 2026.

Mayor Jackie Clayton's statement on the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market fire

“On behalf of City Council, I want to extend heartfelt condolences to the vendors, staff and families affected by the recent fire at the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market. For many of us, this building has been more than a commercial space. It has been a place to see familiar faces, discover new local makers, and share in traditions that connect our community. Its loss is deeply felt.

Family Violence Prevention Month

Mayor Jackie Clayton proclaimed November 2025 as Family Violence Prevention Month in Grande Prairie.  Family Violence Prevention month serves as a poignant reminder that people in our community have either lived or are currently living in abusive family environments. This month recognizes those and calls upon all citizens to speak up, act and help break the cycle of violence.

Grande Prairie City Council invites community to annual Interfaith Lunch

Grande Prairie City Council invites residents to attend the annual Council’s Interfaith Lunch on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Teresa Sargent Hall. 

The Interfaith Lunch brings together residents and faith leaders from across the community to share in connection, dialogue and mutual understanding. Each year, the event features thought-provoking messages from speakers and organizations that explore the role of faith in community.
