City of Grande Prairie 2026-2029 Strategic Plan Announced

City Council officially adopted the City of Grande Prairie 2026-2029 Strategic Plan at the City Council meeting held March 30, 2026, guiding Council and Administration’s decision making over the course of the Council term. 

The Strategic Plan is based on the vision of Grande Prairie as a thriving city known for resilience, innovation and people who empower their community. As Northwestern Alberta’s vibrant centre, the City builds opportunity by working together and embracing the north.

From growth to opportunity: State of the City speakers announced

The City of Grande Prairie is proud to announce the speaker and panelist lineup for the upcoming State of the City: Grander Conversations event, focused on sharing perspectives and priorities shaping the community.

This year’s event will include regional perspectives from Reeve Ryan Ratzlaff of the Municipal District of Greenview and Deputy Reeve Bob Chrenek, highlighting key initiatives and major projects underway across the region, like Wonder Valley.

Introduction of Chief Superintendent Marsden
RCMP Chief Superintendent Marsden introduced himself to City Council and provided background on his role in Grande Prairie.

Presentation of Volunteer Awards
Council presented the 2025 Volunteer Awards today, recognizing Margaret Bowes with the George Repka Outstanding Achievement Award and the Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation with the Bill Bowes Volunteer Organization Award.

City Council highlights for the meeting held February 17, 2026

Delegations 

Sarah Card, on behalf of the Bear Creek Folk Festival provided an update on festival plans for 2026. Council received the presentation for information. 

Public Member Hearings 

Council rescinded the appointments of Kalib Thomas and Karanjot Singh Rakhra to the Youth Advisory Council and appointed Tristan Paragas to the Youth Advisory Council for the 2025-2026 term.

2025 Service Plan

Council approved the Audit Service Plan as presented.

Grande Prairie–Greenview Corridor Leads Alberta in Housing Growth Outside Major Metro Areas

The Grande Prairie–Greenview Corridor is leading Alberta in housing growth outside of the Edmonton and Calgary metropolitan areas, reflecting strong investor confidence and sustained regional demand.

When combined, the region recorded 579 housing starts in 2025, representing over 60 per cent increase from 2024.  This marks the highest housing growth rate and largest net increase in starts among all non-metro regions in the province.

Delegations 

The City of Grande Prairie presented a cheque to the local Special Olympics chapter as a legacy of the 2025 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games.

Holly Sorgen, Executive Director of Community Futures Grande Prairie & Region provided an update on Community Futures activities and community impact, along with plans to celebrate the organization’s 40 year Anniversary. Council received this presentation for information.
