Milling, Paving and Traffic Signal Repairs Start Sunday on Downtown Rehabilitation Project

Construction continues on the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project, with final paving of the roadway to occur on 100 Avenue between 98 Street and 100 Street starting on Monday, October 25.

Operations begin with milling of the existing pavement on the 98 Street and 100 Avenue intersection and on 100 Street between 99 Avenue and 101 Avenue. Once milled, all areas will get repaved followed by the final asphalt surface in the travel and parking lanes on 100 Avenue.

Maskwôtêh Park Temporarily Closed for Pedestrian Bridge Superstructure Installation

Construction on the new Maskwôtêh Park pedestrian bridge continues, with the installation of the steel structure planned for Friday, September 24.

Two mobile cranes will lift the nearly 30-tonne steel superstructure into place from the north support structure. Concrete deck panels will then be installed and an asphalt trails connecting the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital to the bridge will also be built.

Construction of the new Maskwôtêh Park pedestrian bridge is set to be complete in late October, dependent on weather.

Road Rehabilitation Coming to Smith Area

A road rehabilitation project has begun in the Smith neighbourhood to improve the road surface, concrete, and some storm sewer infrastructure as part of the 2021 Road Rehabilitation Program.

Construction continues until the first week in October with work consisting of asphalt milling and replacement of existing roadway, some concrete work and minor storm sewer infrastructure repairs on 99 Avenue and 97 Avenue between 93 Street and 92A Street, and 92A Street between 99 Avenue and 96 Avenue.

Underground Infrastructure Upgrades Result in Temporary Closure of 92 Avenue between Park Road and 92 Street, Local Traffic Only

92 Avenue between Park Road and 92 Street has been temporarily closed as part of the Smith Subdivision Project.

The project consists of several upgrades including replacing the watermain, installing storm sewer and extending utilities to the new Activity and Reception Centre, and rebuilding and paving the roadway.

A signed detour is in place for residential traffic. Heavy truck traffic may access the area from the Park Road and 100 Avenue intersection.

Detour for Southbound Traffic at 100 Street and 139 Avenue Starts Thursday

On Thursday, August 26 all traffic travelling southbound into the city on 100 Street will be detoured west at 139 Avenue.

The closure is required to safely complete the deep storm infrastructure installation and to maintain a safe distance between traffic and open excavations. The detour will be in place for approximately three days and signage will be posted to direct drivers.

Northbound traffic on 100 Street will be reduced to a single lane, but traffic flows will be maintained throughout construction.

Traffic Signals Being Installed at St. John Paul II

The City of Grande Prairie is installing traffic signals at the intersection of Arbour Hills Boulevard and 132 Avenue providing controlled access to and from St. John Paul II Catholic High School

The signals are being installed to help with traffic flow in and around the school site during peak traffic times. They are anticipated to be fully installed and operational before the beginning of the school year.

Temporary lane closures are expected while the contractor installs the infrastructure, but minimal disruption to traffic is expected.

Charles Turner Park in Highland Park Temporarily Closed

Charles Turner Park in the Highland Park neighbourhood will be temporarily closed until the end of the month starting Friday, August 20.

The park is being closed to safely complete the sidewalk rehabilitation project currently underway.

The sidewalks in the Highland Park neighbourhood are undergoing a major rehabilitation and construction is anticipated to be complete by mid-September.

Residents are reminded to watch for workers and pay attention to all posted signage.

100 Avenue and 98 Street Intersection Closed for Deep Utility Upgrades Starting Tuesday

Work on the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project is progressing east, the intersection of 100 Avenue and 98 Street is closing to traffic starting Tuesday, August 10 to accommodate upgrades to the deep underground utilities and roadway and sidewalk work.

The pipes to be upgraded include storm, sanitary, and water lines. The improved utilities will tie into the existing underground utility network and support the opportunity for higher-density development in the downtown core due to increase carrying capacity. After the work is complete the intersection will be repaved.

Road Rehabilitation Coming to Crystal Ridge Area Sunday

Wapiti Gravel Suppliers begins construction in the Crystal Ridge area on Sunday, August 8, weather permitting, as part of the 2021 Road Rehabilitation Program.

The work planned for the area consists of an asphalt milling and replacement of existing road structure with a new pavement structure, some concrete work and minor storm sewer infrastructure repairs on 117 Avenue and 118 Avenue between 98 Street and 97 Street, and 98 Street from 117 Avenue north to the cul-de-sac.

City’s 2021 Sidewalk Program Begins in Highland Park Thursday

On Thursday, August 5, the City of Grande Prairie’s sidewalk program begins in the Highland Park neighbourhood.

Construction takes place along:

  • 99B Street between 87 Avenue and 85 Avenue
  • 99 Street between 88 Avenue and 85 Avenue
  • 85 Avenue between 99B Street and 99 Street
  • Within the Park Avenues

Sidewalks in the area will be brought as close to the City’s current standard as possible, with some sidewalks rehabilitated up to 1.5 metres wide, while others are removed.
