Statement from Grande Prairie Mayor: Welcome 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

I am pleased to welcome the athletes, coaches and spectators who have travelled from across the country to Grande Prairie for the 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. Taking place from May 6 to 11, this elite sporting event marks a significant milestone as it lands in Alberta for the first time in its 21-year history. 

By hosting this event we celebrate both the athletic ability of the participating teams and the rich heritage and traditions of our Indigenous communities. 

City renews naming rights agreement for Weyerhaeuser North Arena at Design Works Centre

The City is announcing a one-year naming rights agreement renewal for the Weyerhaeuser North Arena at Design Works Centre.

“We look forward to advancing our long-standing relationship with Weyerhaeuser for the north arena through the renewed naming rights agreement,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “The Weyerhaeuser North Arena has been a valuable community gathering place for participants, spectators and enthusiasts of ice activities since its initial naming in 2003. This is a legacy that we’re excited to continue throughout 2024.”

City signs naming rights agreement with CDN Controls Ltd. for Design Works Centre south arena

The City of Grande Prairie and CDN Controls Ltd. have signed a one-year naming rights agreement for the south arena at the Design Works Centre. The arena has been renamed to the CDN Controls South Arena.

“Council is excited to add CDN Controls as a partner, contributing to enhanced facilities, programs and well-being in our community through naming rights,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “The City looks forward to offering excellent access to health, wellness and recreation activities with the support of our valuable community partners.”

Two free public skates from Design Works Centre and KMSC Law

The City of Grande Prairie and KMSC Law have partnered to bring residents two public free skates at Design Works Centre; January 28 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and March 3 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The skates promote the Design Works Centre as one of the main venues for the 2024 Alberta Winter Games and encourage community involvement through volunteerism opportunities at the Games. There are various opportunities from before to after the games for residents to get involved and volunteer.

KMSC Law sponsoring public skate at Design Works Centre December 3

Residents and visitors are invited to the Design Works Centre on Sunday, December 3 for a free public skate, sponsored by KMSC Law from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“We’re excited to partner with KMSC Law to host a free skate for the community this year as part of their naming rights for the KMSC Law Room in the Design Works Centre,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “Partnerships, including naming rights agreements, are vital to building engaging relationships in our community and providing residents with greater opportunity for recreation and wellness activities.”

Free Public Skate at Design Works Centre December 18 Sponsored by Industrial Metalwork

The City of Grande Prairie is hosting a free public skate at the Design Works Centre on Sunday, December 18 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. sponsored by Industrial Metalwork.

Free public skating availability is first-come, first-served during the skate time.

Industrial Metalwork staff will be on site handing out soup, sandwiches and hot chocolate as well as hosting a toy fundraiser during the skate.

Design Works Centre Hosting Free Public Skate December 4 Sponsored by KMSC Law

The City of Grande Prairie is hosting a free public skate sponsored by KMSC Law at the Design Works Centre on Sunday, December 4 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

KMSC Law team members will also be at the facility during the free public skate time giving out coffee, hot chocolate and cookies to visitors.

Availability is based on first-come, first-served on December 4 during the free skating time.
