Grande Prairie snow removal crews have fully transitioned into winter operations and crews are actively sanding and plowing priority 1 and 2 routes in response to the ongoing snowfall.

The City of Grande Prairie conducts snow removal in three different ways:

Priority Road Clearing - Plowing and ice control of roadways with high traffic volumes (priority 1 and 2 roads) to ensure access for emergency vehicles, transit buses, and residents. Plowing and sanding of priority 3 roads occurs upon completion of priority 1 and 2 roads.

Applications Open for Annual Neighbourhood Outdoor Rink Program

The Neighbourhood Outdoor Rink Program has opened applications for residents to apply to build and maintain small skating rinks in their neighbourhoods.

The program is a free opportunity providing approved applicants with the supplies to install and maintain small skating rinks in parks located near their homes for the winter.

Applicants must have a group of five committed volunteers to build and maintain the rinks and specify a location for installation. The City provides training on rink installation and maintenance and completes monthly hazard assessments on each build.

Street Sweeping Operations Underway in Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie has started seasonal street sweeping operations on arterial roads.

Street sweeping includes the roadway, medians, concrete barriers, and boulevards. Sweeping of the arterial roadways is anticipated to last until early May, weather dependant. Upon completion of arterial roads, crews will begin sweeping secondary roads, then residential.

City crews have also begun sweeping City trails.

City Crews Preparing for Spring Melt

City of Grande Prairie crews are preparing for spring melt by thawing frozen catch basins to guide melting snow into the underground storm sewer system.

Crews are currently working in the field to ensure all catch basins are thawed using picks, shovels, heavy equipment, and hot water.

This operation protects public and private properties by clearing a path for melting snow and ice to catch basins. Over the winter, cold temperatures may cause a build up of ice in and around catch basins, reducing their ability to drain run-off water.
