City of Grande Prairie crews are preparing for spring melt by thawing frozen catch basins to guide melting snow into the underground storm sewer system.
Crews are currently working in the field to ensure all catch basins are thawed using picks, shovels, heavy equipment, and hot water.
This operation protects public and private properties by clearing a path for melting snow and ice to catch basins. Over the winter, cold temperatures may cause a build up of ice in and around catch basins, reducing their ability to drain run-off water.
Catch basins are visible along concrete curbs and are a ground level entry point for water into the underground storm sewer system.
Residents are reminded that with spring melt it is important to do annual preparation and maintenance on their properties. For a list of urban and rural property tips for this season visit the City website.
Any residents who notice blocked catch basins may clear debris and ice to facilitate water flow or report the blockage to the Citizen Contact Centre at 780-538-0300 or info@cityofgp.com.
