City Council Highlights for May 21, 2019

Here are the highlights from the City Council meeting held on May 21, 2019:

June 3, 2019 – Council Meeting Change of Date

The next City Council meeting date has been changed. The meeting is now scheduled for June 4, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in Council Chambers located in City Hall.

Transit Service Review

City Council approved the use of smaller buses for transit service occurring on select evenings and weekends. In addition, City Council voted to ensure transit users are provided notice of at least 60 days for any changes or adjustments to service.

Amended Schedule of Council and Committee Meetings for 2019

Council approved an amended schedule of Council and Committee meetings for 2019.

Starting on May 14, Council meetings will start at 3:00 p.m., recess at 5:00 p.m. and reconvene at 6:00 p.m. for Public Delegations and Public Hearings. This new schedule is starting on a trial basis to be evaluated on October 21.

Delegations

The Mighty Peace Youth Society requested funding in support of the 2019 Mighty Peace Day. They received $18,000 in funding from City Council’s Strategic Initiative Fund.

Council received information from City residents regarding the proposed removal of a sidewalk. Council referred the discussion to the appropriate standing committee.

Here are the highlights from the City Council meeting held on March 25, 2019:

Delegations

A delegation from the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre presented on a project to create a monument for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Grande Prairie. Council moved to have the Mayor write a letter of support for the project.

Multiple community members presented as delegates. Their presentations were received for information.

Youth Council Recruitment

The City of Grande Prairie Youth Council (GPYC) is an advisory committee to City Council made up of youth between the ages of 13-24. GPYC contributes to building a society of active and engaged citizens by creating opportunities to connect youth with the civic order of governance, local organizations and each other.

Established in 2010, GPYC meets regularly to make decisions about issues affecting local young people and to influence Council's policies and decisions towards young people.

Mayor Encouraging Families to Celebrate Family Day Locally

With the long weekend coming up in honour of Family Day on Monday, February 18, Mayor Bill Given is encouraging residents to celebrate the holiday together at one of the many events happening across Grande Prairie.

“For nearly 30 years we’ve been fortunate to celebrate Family Day in Alberta. This holiday is a perfect reminder of how important it is to get together and spend quality time with our families.

Land Use Bylaw Amendment – Discretionary Use & Variance Authority

Amendments to the Land Use Bylaw C-1260-97 - Discretionary Use & Variance Authority were approved. The amendments modify the application process and increase the authority of the Development Officer.

Here are the highlights from the City Council meeting on July 16, 2018:

Delegations

Rhonda Clarke-Gauthier presented from the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance. She presented an update on the organization, and requested a four-year financial commitment from the City to support their work.

Council referred this to the appropriate standing committee.

City Council Highlights

Youth Art Contest Winners

Winners in the 2018 Municipal Government Day Youth Art Contest were presented by sponsors at Council.

The contest allowed Grande Prairie's young artists to demonstrate their talents in three grade categories – Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3, Grades 4-9 and Grades 10-12 – by matching this year's theme.

About 50 entries were submitted. The theme this year was Grande Prairie – 60 years strong, recognizing that 2018 marks 60 years since Grande Prairie became a City.
