City Council Highlights for the meeting held September 7, 2021

Delegations

Alison Steele presented to council about her experience using public transit in the community. Council received the presentation for information.

Transfer of Housing Assets

City Council approved the transfer of nineteen City-owned social housing units to Grande Spirit Foundation as identified in the 2021-2022 Social Housing Strategy.

The transfer of assets will allow the Grande Spirit Foundation to leverage up to $3 million in funding to develop social housing units.

The Grande Prairie Storm presented as a delegate to provide a financial update, plans for the 2021-2022 season and an update on the request for deferred payment on loan and economic recovery funding request.

Paul Peters, Grant Evaskevich, Iamme Justice and Robin Coward presented as delegates regarding the Coordinated Care Campus.

Brooke Blaikie presented as a delegate regarding naturalization in Mission Heights.

City Council Highlights for June 14, 2021

Delegations

Satbir Baidwan presented as a delegate on behalf of the Grande Prairie Sikh Missionary Society to request Council waive the land purchase cost and associated fees for properties adjacent to the Gudwara Sahib, Grande Prairie’s Sikh temple.

Council directed Administration to bring back more information in partnership with the delegate and report back to the appropriate standing committee.

Mayor Jackie Clayton proclaimed June as Recreation and Parks Month in Grande Prairie.

Regional Leaders Call on Community to Support Each Other During COVID-19 Response: Joint Statement from Mayor Clayton, Reeve Beaupre, Mayor Potter, Mayor Rycroft and Reeve Smith

City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton, County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre, Town of Sexsmith Mayor Kate Potter, Town of Beaverlodge Mayor Gary Rycroft and M.D. of Greenview Reeve Dale Smith are calling on community members to be supportive in COVID-19 response as Alberta case numbers become the highest per capita in Canada and our local health system is reaching a critical point.

“Across the region, we urge all of our community members to continue to support each other in the face of challenge and do their part in the mutual effort to combat COVID-19.

A representative from STARS presented to Council with a request for operational funding and organizational update on COVID-19 and related missions, proactive successes in the midst of the pandemic, mission volume statistics pertinent to Grande Prairie and area, new fleet campaign status and the upcoming arrival of an H145 helicopter for the Grande Prairie base.

The Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance presented an organizational update.

2021 Business Improvement Area Assessment & Tax Bylaws C-1431, C-1432 and C-1433

Council passed the Business Tax & Assessment Bylaw and the Downtown Business Improvement Area Business Tax Rate Bylaw.
