Road Improvements Begin in VLA/Montrose, Country Club West and South Patterson Place Neighbourhoods

The City of Grande Prairie continues capital road construction projects as part of the 2020 construction season in the neighbourhoods of VLA/Montrose, Country Club West, and South Patterson Place.

A total of $16.9 million is being invested into roadway improvements that extend the life of a road or reconstruct a roadway.

City Council Advances Capital Infrastructure Investments to Support Local Economy

City Council approved a plan to utilize available grant funding and available capital tax to advance capital investments to the 2020 construction year. The approved plan maximizes available grant funding and will support the creation of jobs in the community this year.

Included in the revised capital plan are an additional $20 million of infrastructure projects that include moving up projects planned for future years as well as adding in new community facility enhancements that take advantage of COVID-19 closures.

City Begins Construction Season with Road Rehabilitation and Trail Rehabilitation Projects

Update as of May 22, 1:30 p.m.:  The Full Depth Reclamations are now anticipated to start with West Pointe Drive on Thursday, May 28, and completed by end of June 2020.

The work on 116 Avenue is now anticipated to start on June 8 instead.

Work is still expected to be complete by the end of June.

The City of Grande Prairie’s annual Road Rehabilitation Program starts off for the season on May 15, followed by the Trail Rehabilitation Program on May 20.

East Bound Traffic on 99 Avenue near 97 Street Detoured

99 Avenue at the intersection of 97 Street is closed to eastbound traffic starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6.

The closure is to accommodate repairs to the nearby rail crossing and is expected to last approximately six hours.

For the duration of the closure, eastbound motorists on 99 Avenue must detour at 98 Street. Motorists may either:

  • Turn left and travel north to 108 Avenue.
  • Turn right and travel south to 68 Avenue.

Traffic access to the Junction Point strip mall from 99 Avenue will be maintained.

Residents Advised Not to Use Storm Ponds for Recreation

The City of Grande Prairie reminds residents of the significant safety risks associated with using the City’s storm ponds for recreation, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.

City storm ponds are not designed to be used for recreation such as skating. Ice thickness can vary drastically from one location to the next due to water flow from storm pipes draining into the pond. The result is unstable ice formations that present a risk to walk on.

These stormwater ponds are located throughout the City, included but not limited to:

Traffic Signal Upgrades Continue in Grande Prairie

CANA Energy Ltd. will be continuing upgrades on traffic signals along 108 Street this week. The signals that will be impacted are located at:

  • 108 Street and 76 Avenue (Entrance to the Pinnacle and Mission Heights neighbourhoods)
  • 108 Street and 84 Avenue (No Frills)

The signals at these locations are scheduled to go dark, starting at 7:00 p.m., for roughly two and a half hours, on Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 13 respectively.

City Continues Maintenance of Storm Lines and Outfalls in Mission Heights and Avondale

The City of Grande Prairie’s capital investments continue this construction season with the 2019 outfall and storm line repair program as well as the 2019 storm line flushing program.

In the Mission Heights neighbourhood, crews are currently undertaking storm line flushing. The operation is important to remove debris and inspect the City’s storm sewers to ensure the storm system is in proper working order, reducing the likelihood of damage to property.

New Trail on 104 Avenue between 92 Street and 93 Street

The construction of a new pedestrian trail begins tomorrow in the Hillside neighbourhood.  

The construction area on 104 Avenue between 92 Street and 93 Street will be closed to the public until all work is completed. The expected construction completion date is October 31st, 2019. Work zones will be signed and barricaded in the interest of public safety.

The City reminds the public to remain cautious of workers who may be present in the construction area. Please obey all signage and proceed with caution.

Thermoplastic Program Work Begins

AAA Striping & Seal Coating Service will begin installing thermoplastic pavement markings throughout the city starting this week.  

Residents can expect some lane closures in the areas where the contractor will be working. These closures are expected to be short in duration and should not last more than a few hours.

Drivers should expect construction zones to be signed and flagged, as required, and for all speed reductions to be clearly posted.
