Public Invited to Open Houses on Municipal Police Service Review

The City of Grande Prairie is continuing community engagement to understand resident perspective on how to best provide police services in Grande Prairie.

Residents are invited to learn about the current state of policing in Grande Prairie, learn about the similarities and differences between the RCMP and potential municipal police service, and participate in consultation activities.

The public open houses are free to attend and an opportunity to share feedback directly with MNP, the community engagement consultant for this project.

Budget 2023 Approved by City Council

Grande Prairie City Council endorsed a 1.71% tax increase for the 2023 City budget to continue to provide quality services to the community while balancing rising costs of living and global inflation.

The budget deliberations were for approval of the 2023-2026 operating and 2023-2027 capital budgets.

The City uses a multi-year budget aligned City Council’s four-year Strategic Plan. The first year of the budget is approved with the remaining years approved in principle, with deliberations held every year to discuss and adjust as required.

Delegations

  • The Grande Prairie Chamber of Commerce provided an update to Council on the Regional Workforce Development Committee. City Council received the letter for information, with consideration that the funding request has already been submitted to budget deliberations.
  • Nitehawk presented to City Council to request an increase in funding of $19,000 to support ongoing operations. City Council referred the request to budget deliberations.

City and DownTown Association Hosting Christmas Tree Light-Up November 27

The City of Grande Prairie and DownTown Association invite the community to join in the annual Christmas Tree Light-Up on Sunday, November 27 at the H.A. Rice Plaza at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

“The City is thrilled to announce this year’s Christmas tree-light up, an important tradition in the community with our valued partner, the DownTown Association,” says Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We look forward to welcoming our friends, families, neighbours and more to join us for this festive occasion and Battle of the Badges game to kick-off the holiday season.”

Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta presented to Council to request funding in support of the Northwestern Alberta’s Vital Signs 2023.

Land Matter

Council voted to make Plan 1061AE; Block 32; Lots 6, 7, 8 & 9 marketable and approved the sale to Woodland Cree Nation in the amount of $340,000, subject to conditions of the Offer to Purchase.

Small Business Week Proclamations

The City joined the County of Grande Prairie and the Chamber of Commerce to proclaim October 16 to 22 as Small Business Week in the region.

The week celebrates small businesses for being a vital part of our economy and for building vibrant amenities and services.

Delegations

Shauna Baird and Omarla Cooke from St. Joseph Catholic High School presented an idea to Council on painting a school crosswalk to represent reconciliation efforts. Council directed Administration to report back to the appropriate standing committee with the information required to support the request.



Alison Steele presented to Council regarding her experience with the Transit Redesign. The presentation was received for information.
