Guest lecturer presents history of Treaty 8 signing at Grande Prairie Museum on September 14

(Grande Prairie, Alta. – August 28, 2023) The City of Grande Prairie is pleased to welcome guest lecturer Dr. David W. Leonard to the Grande Prairie Museum for a historical lecture titled ‘The Initial Signing of Treaty 8 in 1899’.



Residents are invited to hear Dr. David W. Leonard on Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. in the Grande Prairie Museum’s Community Room.

The free lecture is hosted in partnership with the Peace Country Historical Society and residents are invited to attend the drop-in lecture free of charge and do not need to book in advance.

City Celebrating Heritage Day at the Grande Prairie Museum on August 5

The community is invited to join the City of Grande Prairie for the annual Heritage Day event on Saturday, August 5 at the Grande Prairie Museum and Heritage Village from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Heritage Day is a time to celebrate the history, diversity and various cultures that makes our community such a vibrant, connected and inclusive place to live,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Heritage Village and Grande Prairie Museum, where much of our community’s architectural and historical heritage lives.”

Reverend Forbes Homestead Afternoon Teas Returning July & August

Afternoon teas are returning to the Reverend Forbes Homestead and Pioneer Hospital, the city’s oldest home, for July and August.

The afternoon teas begin at 2 p.m. throughout the summer on the following Wednesdays and Thursdays:

  • July: 19, 20, 26 and 27
  • August: 2 and 3

The afternoon teas in August are specially themed for the Coronation of King Charles, which took place earlier this year, and feature a raffle for a coronation prize basket. 

Celebrate International Museum Day with Free Activities at Local Museums May 21

The City of Grande Prairie invites visitors from across the region to celebrate International Museum Day with free activities at three local museums on Sunday, May 21, 2023; the Grande Prairie Museum, Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum and Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre.

Community Invited to New Textile Tales Museum Exhibit Launch April 29

The City of Grande Prairie is hosting an event to launch the new Textile Tales exhibit at the Grande Prairie Museum on April 29 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Textile Tales features some of the best examples of textiles through different blankets, jackets and more. The exhibit is open to visit until November 2023 and is free of charge. Textile Tales also incorporates various hands-on activities, including:

Community Invited to New Exhibit Launch at the Grande Prairie Museum

The Grande Prairie Museum is launching a new exhibit called ‘Mother Earth: Boreal Beauty of the Peace Country’ featuring 82 photos from Sharon Krushel’s book by the same name.

The exhibit launch features an event on December 3 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. including a book signing, storytelling, fun facts about local creatures and species and live music featuring Kelsi McInnes from McKindred.

A 30-minute presentation from Sharon Krushel about the book’s creation with songs begins at 2 p.m. in the Community Room.

Heritage Village Folktales Tour Returning October 15 and 16

The City of Grande Prairie is proud to present the annual Heritage Village Folktales Tour this year on October 15 and 16 at the Grande Prairie Museum and Heritage Village.

The Heritage Village Folktales Tour, put on in partnership with the South Peace Regional Archives, is an evening walking tour through the outdoor village. Guests will listen to stories about local history that feature both fact and fictional elements. With a range of interesting, local stories, there is something for everyone.
