The City of Grande Prairie is hosting an event to launch the new Textile Tales exhibit at the Grande Prairie Museum on April 29 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Textile Tales features some of the best examples of textiles through different blankets, jackets and more. The exhibit is open to visit until November 2023 and is free of charge. Textile Tales also incorporates various hands-on activities, including:

  • ribbon weaving;
  • table loom weaving;
  • peg weaving; and
  • hand sewing.

The exhibit launch event on April 29 includes demonstrations from local textile groups, refreshments and various textile crafts incorporating different techniques like Métis finger weaving and French spool knitting.

“This new exhibit highlights the cultural importance of different textiles and clothing through all aspects of life,” said Charles Taws, Grande Prairie Museum Curator and Historical Resources Supervisor. “The City really strived to ensure this exhibit was inclusive to all ages and cultures in our region through the various items and activities featured.”

The Grande Prairie Museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
