City encouraging community involvement at 2025 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games

The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games City of Grande Prairie 2025 (SOGP 2025) is officially under 100 days away from kicking off. The sport tourism event welcomes over 1000 athletes from 20 affiliates across Alberta and the Northwest Territories to compete in Grande Prairie from July 11 to 13, 2025. 

The Host Organizing Committee Games Manager attended City Council on Monday, April 7 to provide an update on the Games which included information about the Athlete Ambassador Program, fundraising initiatives and an event overview. 

Applications now open for Community Group Funding

Applications for the next Community Group Funding cycle beginning in 2026 are now open until April 30, 2025. Community Group Funding is a stream of City funding available for programs and services run by community groups that benefit the community and residents.

Community Group Funding was updated for the next funding cycle, with key changes including increased parameters for capital requests and the introduction of three funding streams:

City hosts third annual GirlZone event October 5

The City of Grande Prairie is excited to bring back GirlZone, an activity-based day for girls ages 10 to 15, on October 5. 

GirlZone aims to encourage young women to try new skills and recreational activities in a non-judgemental setting with their peers. The event also attempts to grow girls’ participation in sports during adolescence while creating a safe and inclusive space for participants to try new things.

Grande Prairie Museum hosting Heritage Day event August 3

Celebrate culture and diversity at the City’s Heritage Day event taking place in the Grande Prairie Museum’s Heritage Village on August 3 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Our Heritage Day event is a special opportunity for our community to come together and honour the rich culture of our region and beyond,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “We encourage residents and visitors to join the celebration by attending the event or by setting up a cultural or community booth.” 

Installation of new turf for lawn bowling is complete

The City of Grande Prairie is proud to announce the completion of the new turf installation at our lawn bowling facility located in Muskoseepi Park. 

"Enhancing recreational facilities is one part of Council's strategic priority of improving residents' Quality of Life,” said Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “The new lawn bowling turf demonstrates our commitment to providing amenities that foster community engagement and promote a healthy, active lifestyle."
