The City of Grande Prairie is excited to bring back GirlZone, an activity-based day for girls ages 10 to 15, on October 5.

GirlZone aims to encourage young women to try new skills and recreational activities in a non-judgemental setting with their peers. The event also attempts to grow girls’ participation in sports during adolescence while creating a safe and inclusive space for participants to try new things.

“GirlZone is a great event to address the gender gaps we see locally in youth recreation, and empower young girls to build confidence, develop new skills and connect with peers in a supportive environment,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “These initiatives are key for building an inclusive, caring community that supports all our residents, while also promoting an active lifestyle and highlighting our incredible local facilities.”

This year’s GirlZone program features nine different activities ranging from practical skills, sports and hobbies for an action-packed day, including:

  • Self-defence lesson with ENGAGE Athletic Performance at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Squash fundamentals with the Grande Prairie Squash Club at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Gymnastics with Grande Prairie Gymnastics at Gymniks.
  • Gentle yoga at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Cooking with Alberta Health Services at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Soccer with Swan City FC at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Bike skills with Nitehawk at South Bear Creek Park.
  • Guided painting craft at South Bear Creek Pavilion.
  • Drama games at South Bear Creek Pavilion.

Motivational speaker and yoga instructor Jennifer Edwards will present to attendees during lunch on the power of self-talk and its impact on self-confidence. Edwards is an active community member in Grande Prairie known for her work with youth, positive speaking and classes centred on self-discovery and encouragement.

Registration is $20 and includes the cost of lunch. There are four different groups scheduled for GirlZone, with each group visiting seven of the nine total listed activities. Participants can choose the group with the most activities they are interested in when registering. Register today under GirlZone at cityofgp.com/events.

Nitehawk will supply bicycles for participants to bike or walk between the Eastlink Centre and South Bear Creek Park for each session. Attendees interested in biking must bring a helmet.
