Fire Ban in Effect Immediately

Update on May 26, 2023 - This fire ban was lifted on May 26, 2023.



Effective at 3 p.m. on May 5, 2023 the City of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Department has issued a Fire and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) ban within the municipal boundaries. The ban is in effect due to dry conditions and a lack of significant rainfall in the forecast making conditions in the area an Extreme fire hazard.

Negligence or willful non-compliance may result in up to $10,000 per day administrative penalties under authority of the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

City Fire Department Issues Reminder Following Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Incident

On Friday, October 14, 2022, at 12:12 p.m., the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm activation in a business north of downtown.

On arrival, the fire department found elevated carbon monoxide levels in the business and adjoining business.

Occupants of two businesses were experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several animals also had to be removed from the building.

Fire Department Celebrates New Engine with Push-In Ceremony

Update as of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2022: Due to scheduling matters, the decision was made to cancel a rescheduled date for the Engine Push-In Ceremony. The new engine is now operational and equipped with several enhancements.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department thanks the community for the support and are proud to be equipped with the new truck to continue to keep residents safe.


Update as of 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2022: The Engine Push-In Ceremony is temporarily postponed. A rescheduled date will be provided once confirmed. 

Fire Advisory Issued for Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie Fire Department has issued a fire advisory for Grande Prairie due to the current high temperatures in the city leading to an increased local fire hazard.

Under the advisory, permits for heavy fuels (brush piles, windrows, etc.) will not be issued. All other permits remain effective and new permits for lighter fuels will be considered on a site-by-site basis.

Any burning without a valid fire permit is strictly prohibited.

Residents are allowed the following uses under this fire advisory:

All burning is suspended within the City of Grande Prairie.

No new open burning permits will be issued until conditions improve in the City and GP Forest Area.

Fire Ban includes the following but is not limited:

  • All opening burning
  • Consumer fireworks and exploding targets
  • Backyard fire pits
  • Campground fire pits
  • Burn barrels/ incinerators
  • Charcoal briquettes, includes meat smoker
  • Turkey fryers
  • Tiki torches

News Review City Firefighters Honored at Annual Awards and Medal Presentations Ceremony

Eight awards were presented to 24 individuals at the Grande Prairie Fire Department’s Annual Awards and Medal Presentation on March 8 in Council Chambers. 

The awards recognize long-service to firefighting, and outstanding contributions to fire services.

“We have an incredible team who have committed their lives to keeping our community safe,” said Preben Bossen, Grande Prairie Fire Chief. “It is important to us to take time to recognize their efforts and dedication to fire services.”

Fireworks Permit to Purchase and Possess

NOTE: This permit is issued by the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department under its jurisdiction within the boundaries of the City of Grande Prairie. Should any person desire to purchase fireworks outside of the City of Grande Prairie, a permit must be obtained from the municipality involved to purchase and/or display.

Fees and Timelines

This permit is valid for the purchase, possession, and display of 1 fireworks event. $44 (No GST).

Each additional display is $22.
