FireSmart Vegetation Management work begins October 15

The City of Grande Prairie begins FireSmart Vegetation Management work on October 15, 2024.

In February 2024, the City was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) to action a Vegetation Management Program by December 31, 2024. The goal of this initiative is to mitigate wildfire risks by removing dead or fire-prone trees and thinning dense vegetation.

Two treatment areas, identified in the 2019 South Bear Creek Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, are as follows:

City lifts fire restriction as risk lowers to moderate

Effective Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department has lifted the Fire Restriction for the city. This decision follows recent rain and cooler temperatures, which have reduced the wildfire danger in the area to a moderate level.

This change aligns with Alberta Wildfire’s move to lift all restrictions in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. While the risk has decreased, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow all burning guidelines to ensure community safety.

City Downgrades Fire Ban to Fire Restriction

Effective Monday, July 29, 2024, at 4:00 p.m., the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department has downgraded the current Fire Ban to a Fire Restriction due to recent precipitation, while still recognizing the high community fire risk.

During this period, stringent fire-related restrictions remain in place. For a detailed list of approved and prohibited activities, devices, and appliances, residents are advised to check the new Fire Hazard Index table on the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department Page: cityofgp.com/GPFD.

Fire Restriction lifted for the City of Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie Fire Department has lifted the fire restriction for the City of Grande Prairie as of May 30. The recent and expected rainfall has resulted in a low wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. While a fire can still ignite, it is not expected to spread to deeper vegetation layers or larger fuels such as trees.

"The recent weather conditions have significantly reduced the fire risk in our area," said Fire Marshal Chris Renyk. "We encourage residents to continue practicing fire safety to maintain this low risk."

Fire Ban now in effect

Effective at 1 p.m. on May 8, 2024 the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department has issued a Fire Ban within the municipal boundaries. The ban is in place due to dry conditions and a lack of significant rain fall in the forecast making conditions in the area an extreme fire hazard.

Residents are advised that the Fire Ban order will:
