At approximately 6:00 p.m. yesterday evening, the Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD) responded to reports of a wildfire in the area of Crystal Lake Park. The department initiated a full-scale response, calling in off-duty personnel to assist with the incident while ensuring adequate coverage remained for the city.
A total of eight firefighting apparatus, along with numerous firefighters, were dispatched to the scene. Additional support was provided by the RCMP, City Enforcement Services, and EMS. Fire crews swiftly established a defensive line between the wildfire and nearby properties.

The wildfire was successfully brought under control before it reached the defensive line, ensuring no structures were threatened. The fire was officially listed as under control shortly after 8:00 p.m. Crews continue to monitor and address hotspots in the area.

“The GPFD is grateful for the diligence of residents that called 9-1-1 immediately, allowing us to action the wildfire quickly and effectively,” said Fire Chief Mark VanWerkhoven. “This is a good reminder that despite recent rain, our local conditions require extreme care with anything that can be a source of ignition.”

Fire investigators are currently on scene to determine the cause of the wildfire. Access to Crystal Lake Park may be restricted throughout the day due to ongoing operations.

The City would like to thank those who promptly called 911 and reminds residents to always call 911 immediately if they notice any fires in the City of Grande Prairie area.
