Nominations Open for Passionate Heart Awards

The County and City of Grande Prairie, towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley and the Village of Hythe are searching for outstanding individuals and local organizations to honour at the 14th Annual Passionate Heart Awards.

Nominations are encouraged for people and organizations who contribute significantly to their community, enhance social services in the region, and are dedicated to improving quality of life.

City of Grande Prairie Collaboration Grant Funding Community Kitchen Project

The City of Grande Prairie has awarded $72,000 through a Collaboration Grant to the Salvation Army of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre to support their Community Kitchen Project.

The Community Kitchen Project is a collaborative effort to merge two existing and independently operated kitchens into one to meet the needs of present day Grande Prairie and plan for long-term sustainability. The project will be coordinated by both agencies and a community-led committee.

Opioid Education Session Being Hosted on November 20

The Community Opioid Response Task Force is hosting an Opioid Education Session on Wednesday, November 20 that is open to the whole community.

Featured at the session will be a screening of the Critical Condition: The Opioid Crisis in Grande Prairie video series, special guest speaker Kris Ponto presenting on his lived experience with opioid use and homelessness and a Q&A with a panel of subject matter experts.

The session takes place in the Rotary Room of the Grande Prairie Public Library from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.

Rotary Club of Grande Prairie and City of Grande Prairie Partner to Address Daytime Homelessness

The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie is allocating $1 million in funding towards a new daytime homeless shelter in Grande Prairie in partnership with the City of Grande Prairie.

The creation of a new daytime shelter is providing an important resource for the community. Benefits of this shelter include connecting people experiencing homelessness with shelter and essential services during the day, reducing their interactions with law enforcement and emergency medical services, providing them access to a centralized program intake and access to support services.

Orange Shirt Day 2019

Orange Shirt Day is being commemorated in Grande Prairie on Monday, September 30 at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre (10507- 98 Avenue).

This year’s Orange Shirt Day event includes keynote speakers, smudging, a display of Indigenous authors available at the Grande Prairie Public Library, and a free community lunch.

The keynote speakers include three individuals of different generations who will be sharing their stories about the impacts of residential schools to help create awareness, empathy and hope.

City of Grande Prairie Offering Grant to Support Community Collaboration on Social Issues

The City of Grande Prairie in partnership with the Government of Alberta’s Family and Community Supports Services (FCSS) Program is offering a Collaboration Grant: Building Capacity for Collaboration and Systems Transformation Funding to local organizations and groups aiming to make a social difference in the community.

Community Invited to Annual Report on Ending Homelessness

The City of Grande Prairie and the Community Advisory Board on Housing and Homelessness (CABH) are hosting their Annual Report to the Community on Ending Homelessness on Friday, July 5.

The event takes place at Teresa Sargent Hall from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. and features the results of the 2018-2019 annual report, community speakers, highlights from the past year and a free barbeque lunch.

Opioid Crisis Education Sessions Being Hosted at the Grande Prairie Public Library

The Grande Prairie Community Opioid Response Task Force is hosting multiple opioid crisis education sessions in the coming weeks to provide education and resources to members of the community impacted by the crisis.

Two sessions are being held, with each session focusing on different pillars of the Grande Prairie Community Opioid Response Recommendations.
