Snow Clearing Brochure

Snow Clearing Brochure

The City of Grande Prairie maintains three types of roads in the winter:

1. Priority 1, 2, 3

2. Residential

3. Rural

Priority snow clearing:

City crews monitor, plow, windrow, sand and salt priority 1, 2 and 3 roads. Priority 1 roads are cleared first to make safe way for fire trucks, ambulances, other essential services and residents. Priority 2 and 3 routes are cleared after priority 1 routes are complete.

Residential snow clearing:

Residential clearing is triggered when there is a significant build-up of snow and declared by the City, taking place in a two-week rotation.

  •  Monday to Friday
  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Week A & Week B

The City has assigned neighbourhoods to a "week A" and "week B" schedule. When a round of residential snow removal is declared by the City, crews will clear all residential roads (starting with week A before moving to week B) within a two-week rotation. To learn more about this schedule, please visit cityofgp.com/residentialsnowremoval.

Parking in Residential Areas

Follow these guidelines to help the City clear residential roads safely, quickly, and with minimal risk of property damage, in accordance with Bylaw C-1166.

No Parking:

  • If there is a windrow in the parking lane.
  • On residential roads from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on assigned plowing days or when signs indicate.
  • On priority 2 roads and permanent snow routes when a parking ban is in effect.

Snow Storage

Priority 1 Roads: Snow is plowed past the curb and stored on City-owned boulevards.
Priority 2 Roads: Snow is windrowed to the center and removed later.

Residential Roads: Snow is managed based on road features:

  • Without a sidewalk: Snow is plowed to the side of the road.
  • Sidewalk on one side: Snow is pushed past the curb and stored on the City boulevard.
  • Sidewalks on both sides: Snow may be windrowed or stored on the boulevard.
  • Cul-de-sacs: Snow is piled and stored in the center.

Tracking Map

The Residential Snow Removal Tracking Map keeps residents informed with real-time updates every 30 minutes on the progress of snow removal crews. For access, visit cityofgp.com/snow.

Sidewalk Shoveling

Residents must remove snow or ice from sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours of snowfall. Snow cleared from sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, or private lanes must not be placed on City property or in the road right-of-way, including ditches.

Lawn Ornaments & Plants

To protect items such as lawn ornaments, shrubs, and decorations, place them toward the back of your lawn. City-owned boulevards used for snow storage can extend up to four meters from the curb, depending on property location.
