As residents begin seasonal landscaping projects, the City of Grande Prairie is reminding the community to confirm property lines, understand boulevard areas and learn more about the local urban forest before starting work around their homes.

About Boulevard Trees

The City owns a portion of land along the front and sometimes the side of every titled property, known as the boulevard. This area is primarily reserved for utilities and often includes trees that are planted and maintained by the City.

Understanding where the boulevard is located helps prevent damage to trees and underground infrastructure during landscaping or construction. Property lines can be confirmed using a Real Property Report or by contacting AccessGP.

Boulevard trees are part of the community’s shared urban forest, contributing to shade, air quality and the overall character of neighbourhoods. Pruning or removal of these trees is completed by City crews to support long-term health and consistency across the city.

Local Tree Guide

When planning landscaping projects, residents are encouraged to select tree species suited to Grande Prairie’s growing conditions and allow space for mature growth. The City’s Local Tree Guide, available at cityofgp.com/trees, provides guidance on recommended species and planting considerations.

“Trees are an important part of what makes Grande Prairie feel welcoming and connected,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “Boulevard trees are carefully planned and maintained as part of our shared public spaces, and understanding their role helps us continue building healthy, vibrant neighbourhoods throughout the community. I encourage residents to learn more about our urban forest and the resources available through the City before starting outdoor projects this season.”

Questions about boulevard trees or other City-owned trees can be directed to AccessGP by dialing 311 or emailing info@cityofgp.com.
