The Access to Information Act, SA 2024, c. A-1.4 (“ATIA”) and the Protection of Privacy Act, SA 2024, c. P-28.5 (“POPA”) came into force on June 11, 2025. These two pieces of legislation replace Alberta’s former Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, RSA 2000, c. F-25 (“FOIP”).
On June 8, 2026 the City of Grande Prairie Council adopted Policy 507 – Privacy Management. This policy establishes the governance framework and components for the City’s Privacy Management Program (PMP), promoting consistent, secure and lawful handling of Personal Information and supporting the City in meeting its legislated obligations under Provincial Privacy Legislation.
The City is working to update its website, procedures, forms, and other materials to reflect the new PMP framework and comply with legislation. If you have questions or concerns during this transition, please email ati@cityofgp.com.
The City of Grande Prairie collects personal information only when it is authorized to do so under the Protection of Privacy Act. Personal information may be collected if it:
- Is necessary for operating a service, program or activity of the City;
- Is authorized by Alberta or Canada law; or
- Is collected for law enforcement purposes.
The City uses and discloses personal information only for the purpose for which it was collected, or as otherwise authorized under the Protection of Privacy Act.
Personal information includes identifiers such as name, home address, personal email, date of birth, gender, family status, employment or criminal history. A comprehensive definition of what constitutes personal information is set out in Section 1(q) of the Protection of Privacy Act.

Under Alberta’s Access to Information Act (“ATIA”) and the Protection of Privacy Act (“POPA”), you have rights when it comes to your personal information and access to City records.
