Afternoon teas are returning to the Reverend Forbes Homestead and Pioneer Hospital, the city’s oldest home, for July and August.

The afternoon teas begin at 2 p.m. throughout the summer on the following Wednesdays and Thursdays:

  • July: 19, 20, 26 and 27
  • August: 2 and 3

The afternoon teas in August are specially themed for the Coronation of King Charles, which took place earlier this year, and feature a raffle for a coronation prize basket.

“We welcome all residents to come explore one of our community’s historical gems while enjoying time with your loved ones in the green space at the age-inclusive Forbes Homestead afternoon tea events,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton.

Afternoon tea costs $5 and includes a large scone (choice of plain, raisin or cheese), jam, butter and choice of tea, coffee or juice. Time is allotted to ensure participants also have an opportunity to tour the homestead during their visit.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Grande Prairie Museum at 780-830-7090.

The August 3 afternoon tea is sponsored by the Peace Country Historical Society, which will have an information display on-site.

Forbes Afternoon Tea History

Agnes Forbes, wife of Reverend Alexander Forbes, was one of the first pioneers and health care providers in this area. She tended to both physical ailments as well as mental ones, keeping her door open to provide visitors with good advice and a cup of tea.

Mrs. Forbes frequently hosted tea parties at her home which became popular community building events in the early settlement years.
