The installation of pedestrian activated crossing signals and traffic signals is underway in various locations across the City of Grande Prairie.

On November 1, the replacement of traffic signals at two intersections begins, 108 Street and 116 Avenue as well as 110 Street and 100 Avenue. Both locations will see reduced traffic lanes during construction, however all traffic movements will be maintained. Construction on these locations is anticipated to take approximately two months.

To increase pedestrian safety, the City is installing two different types of pedestrian signals at multiple locations.

Overhead Pedestrian Flashers are traffic signals that create a safe method to cross by flashing amber lights at vehicles when activated by a push button by pedestrians and also providing additional lighting of the crosswalk.

They are being installed at two locations:

  • 88 Avenue and Resources Road
  • 104 Avenue and 102 Street

Temporary lane closures and reduced speeds are anticipated.

Rapid Flashing Beacons are pedestrian activated flashing lights that signal the intent of a pedestrian to cross and increase visibility of the pedestrian and attract attention of drivers. An example is currently in place at 98 Street and 103 Avenue, adjacent to the Montrose Cultural Centre. They will be installed at 13 additional locations in the coming weeks:

  • 117 Ave. and 108 St.
  • 121 Ave. and 102 St.
  • 72 Ave. and 100 St.
  • 104 Ave. and 111 St.
  • 75 Ave. and 100 St.
  • 112 Ave. and 106 St.
  • 63 Ave. West of 96B St.
  • 110 Ave. and 90 St.
  • 67 Ave. and 99 St./100 St.
  • 108 Ave. and 88C St.
