Local businesses seeking financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic can now apply for the Training Grant and Barrier-Free Grant.

In March, City Council allocated $225,000 from the City’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Fund for the grants.

The Barrier-Free Grant has been developed to create new opportunities for businesses to access funding, spur investment and local spending while helping increase accessibility across the City.

It is designed to incentivize business and commercial property owners to invest in removing any barriers that prevent persons with physical, cognitive or sensory disabilities from accessing spaces, the program will offer a matching grant up to 50% to a maximum of $10,000 for improvements.

Eligible projects include improvements to commercial buildings or properties, such as transitions from parking areas or public land to the building entrance or property and ensuring unobstructed access to services through projects such as ramps, parking lot improvements, service counters, seating areas or accessible washrooms.

The Training Grant supports businesses in training and upskilling their existing staff to continue to provide meaningful employment while adapting to the pressures of COVID-19. Training and education opportunities can cover a variety of business functions including marketing, human resources, computer literacy, or bookkeeping.

Businesses are eligible for a grant equal to 25% of registration costs for training and education initiatives over $300 per person to a maximum amount of $2,500 per business or a grant equal to 50% of registration costs for training and Education Initiatives less than $300 to a maximum grant amount of $1,250.

Applications must be submitted on behalf of the business based on training requirements that would support their business operations.

The Local Marketing Grant and Beautification & Patio Grant remain available for businesses.

Businesses interested in learning more about the grants may contact the program coordinator at economicrecovery@cityofgp.com. Applications and details about all grants are available at cityofgp.com/economicrecoveryprogram.
