On August 10, Grande Prairie City Council approved the Economic Recovery Program, allocating $500,000 from the Economic Recovery Fund for two grant opportunities that support the local economic recovery with a focus on support grants, building improvement programs, and development incentives.
Phase One of the Economic Recovery Program provides immediate economic stimulus and consists of $450,000 for the Beautification and Patio Grant, as well as $50,000 for the Local Marketing Grant which businesses may apply for starting on August 24, 2020.
The Beautification and Patio Grant acts as an immediate economic driver by providing local employment and business for local trades and suppliers, as well as enhancing building aesthetics contributing to the beautification and vibrancy of the city.
The program will focus on beautification of the City which will include the following components:
- Façade improvements to commercial businesses to improve aesthetic appeal, accessibility and safety.
- Landscaping and signage improvements to enhance the exterior of businesses with landscaping and improved signage.
- Patios to create vibrancy by placing activities outside and connecting businesses to the streets.
The grant can be used to cover up to 50% of eligible costs, up to a maximum of $15,000 for Façade and Landscaping Improvements and the creation of new patio spaces.
The Local Marketing Grant is available to support local businesses develop marketing initiatives, materials or content that will support regional COVID-19 recovery efforts and drive tourism by attracting visitors to the city from the greater Peace Region. The grant enhances the marketing efforts or digital presence of a local business resulting in driving cash flow to local businesses and accelerating the local economic recovery.
The grant covers up to 50% to a maximum of $2,500. Collaborative projects involving three or more businesses are eligible for 75% of funding up to $7,500. The intent of this will be to drive tourism efforts, enhance the visitor experience, encourage placemaking and create natural partnerships.
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis and funds are allocated to businesses that meet the criteria in a first-come first-served model. Details are available on the City website at: cityofgp.com/economicrecoveryprogram.
