The City of Grande Prairie is commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, on March 21 with a gallery exhibit at Teresa Sargent Hall.

Visitors will walk through a photo exhibit that showcases stories of local community members from different cultures and encourages conversation on the importance of being a welcoming and inclusive community. Facilitators will be available to help guide visitors through the exhibit.  Visitors will be able to leave their thoughts and impressions of the display and share any learnings that arise from the exhibit.

The purpose of the event is to encourage visitors to learn about the experiences and contributions that residents from all different cultures make in our community and bring awareness of the unconscious bias, stigma and racism that are still faced by many around the world.

The event takes place from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and is free to attend, family-friendly, and open to all ages and backgrounds.

Background

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was declared by the United Nations in 1966 to encourage people worldwide to continue to make strides to eliminate racial discrimination of all forms. The theme for 2020 is “United Against Racism: Dignity and Justice for All”.
