The City of Grande Prairie has been selected as one of only three Alberta municipalities to take part in a new RCMP pilot project, presenting an easier way for residents to report certain types of crime.
The Grande Prairie RCMP detachment is taking part in phase one of the Alberta RCMP’s online crime reporting pilot program beginning June 1, 2020. Online reporting will allow for increased responsiveness to residents through improved customer service with a quicker and easier reporting process while also enabling more effective use of RCMP resources.
City Council had previously met with the RCMP K Division and the Provincial Justice Minister to advocate for the program, which ensures that residents have easily accessible options when reporting to the RCMP.
“Being selected for this pilot project is positive news for our community, and demonstrates the success of Council’s advocacy efforts,” says Mayor Bill Given.
“Creating the option to report crime online allows for greater accessibility in reporting which in turns allows us to be more responsive to residents’ needs, streamline the reporting process to enable a more effective deployment of our valuable frontline policing resources, and ultimately, help us better map our crime data across the city.”
The City of Grande Prairie has a strong track record piloting new RCMP initiatives. In 2018, the City became the first RCMP jurisdiction to implement a Collision Reporting Centre.
