City Council held their annual organizational meeting and approved the 2024 Council Calendar and committee appointments, as presented.
Delegations
Rising Above presented to City Council with a capital request of $333,000 to fund a residential addiction treatment facility, City Council referred the item to 2024-25 budget deliberations.
Brooke Blaikie presented to City Council seeking re-establishment of mowing of the Mission Heights Ravine, City Council received the presentation for information.
Dustin Archibald and Sam Elwood presented to City Council on behalf of the Peace Country Progressive Alliance seeking support for the LGBTQ+ community, City Council received the presentation for information.
Grande Prairie Public Library Operational Funding
The Grande Prairie Public Library Presented to City Council requesting a funding increase. City Council referred the request to the 2024-25 budget deliberations.
Indoor Climbing Wall
City Council approved the Activity and Reception Centre as the location for a new Indoor Climbing Wall.
Proposed Recreation Facility Site Options
City Council selected option 4 & 5 to be included in public engagement for a proposed indoor recreation facility in the Avondale area.
They also directed admin to show an extension of the existing parking lot in option 4 and east-to-west parking in option 5.
Coordinated Care Campus Funding
City Council approved $780,000 from the Financial Stabilization Reserve to replace the roof at the Coordinate Care Campus.
Playground Strategy
City Council approved the playground strategy, which outlines an approach to prioritize the renewal of playgrounds across the city.
Naturalization Update
City Council made amendments to the Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program that:
- Reinstate mowing adjacent to residential private property fences.
- Reinstate mowing at the 84th Avenue location, where newly growing trees posed a risk to overhead power and snow storage capacity.
City Council directed administration to bring back options and budget implications related to adjusting the remaining two years of the Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program to include aesthetically enhanced naturalization where desirable, in Q1 of 2024.
City Council also made amendments to the city-wide naturalization program to include FireSmart principles and to remove the Mission Heights Ravine from approved naturalization areas.
City Council directed administration to bring back to the appropriate standing committee a report regarding when and how special levies can be used, which levies are currently in place in the City, and info on any significant projects in the City’s history that have been funded through special levies.
