Here are the highlights for the City Council Meeting held July 13, 2020:

Delegations

The following delegations attended City Council today:

  • Bandaged Paws presented regarding support for the organization as they continue to support the community in caring for animals, the council referred the delegation to the appropriate standing committee.
  • The Council Remuneration Review Committee presented the new remuneration model, Council referred the report to the appropriate standing committee and acknowledged that the committee completed their work as required.
  • Local medical doctors presented to City Council to seek support from local elected officials for the Alberta Medical Association to return to binding arbitration. Council affirmed the importance of doctors to our community and will pursue meeting with local MLA Allard and Minister Toews to discuss healthcare and other important issues.

Supportive Housing Proposal

City Council received a Supportive Housing Proposal from a private investor to utilize an existing building in the community to provide 44 additional supportive housing in the City. Pending further negotiations, City Council approved an economic stimulus grant of $291,000 and ongoing operating grant of $100,000 for a related non-profit organization to manage the facility and identify affordable and supportive housing opportunities on an ongoing basis.

Mental Health and Policing

City Council directed Mayor Given to write to Premier Kenney and ministers expressing the effectiveness of local Police and Crisis Teams. Council also directed Administration to ensure any proposed budget increases to RCMP have contrasting investments proposed for mental health and addictions support, supportive housing, and preventative community development initiatives.

Change of Use

City Council approved a change of use for the ground floor of the CAIRN mixed-use apartment building to allow a health facility and counselling services on the main floor.

Special Council Meeting – ICF Protocol Approvals

City Council adopted the minutes from a Special City Council Meeting held on July 8, where ICF Protocols were approved. Details on the protocols are listed online.

Community Group Funding

City Council approved over $5.5 Million in Community Group Funding to support local organizations that enhance the community, culture, and safety of the community.
