Here are the highlights for the City Council Meeting held August 10, 2020:
Delegations
Elkan Environmental Engineering presented as a delegate to Council regarding mandatory masking.
Residents from Mission Heights presented as delegates regarding naturalization and park spaces.
Economic Recovery Program
Council approved the Economic Recovery Program, and funding up to $500,000 from the Economic Recovery Fund to provide support to businesses during the pandemic.
The program focuses on three key areas: local support grants, building improvement programs, and development incentives.
Phase 1 includes the following grant opportunities to support local businesses:
- The Beautification and Patio Grant
- The Local Marketing Grant
More details about the program and the application process will be announced later this week.
Additionally, Council approved the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce’s $50,000 grant request for the purchase of the Get in the Loop digital marketing program for local businesses.
Policy 100 - Council Remuneration
Council approved Policy 100, being the Council Remuneration and Expense Reimbursement Policy. It comes into effect after the next municipal election.
Bylaw C-1425A - Amendment to the COVID-19 Eastlink Centre and Grande Prairie Outdoor Pool User Fee Bylaw
Council approved amendments to the COVID-19 Eastlink Centre and Grande Prairie Outdoor Pool User Fee Bylaw to improve accessibility for the community and enhance flexibility for administration to set rates during re-openings.
Bylaw C-1166I - Amendment to the Traffic Bylaw
Council approved amendments to the traffic bylaw. The amendments include outlining a new truck route, consistent playground/school zones, and speed limit adjustments around the City.
Correspondence
Grande Spirit Foundation wrote Council requesting a Letter of Support required by the province for them to borrow funds for a new capital build.
United Nurses of Alberta wrote Council advocating for mandatory masking.
Delegation Business
Council directed Administration to bring forward a public information campaign to inform residents about the appropriate use of face coverings in indoor public spaces on a voluntary basis.
Council directed Administration to develop for future Council consideration a bylaw mandating the use of face coverings in indoor public spaces that includes recommendations of appropriate public health indicators that includes trigger points for the removal and enactment of such requirements.
