Starting May 10, the City’s capital construction season is scheduled to begin with road and trail overlays throughout the city.

Road Construction

Road overlay work is starting on Pinnacle Drive between 112 Street and 108 Street and will include cold milling, concrete work, storm sewer infrastructure repairs, asphalt overlay, line painting and landscaping.

Sidewalk access will be maintained during construction; however, pedestrians should expect some disruptions.

Crews continue construction of the mill and overlay project on 92 Street, 67 Avenue to south of 72 Avenue, and on 68 Avenue between Resources Road and 86 Street. Work to be completed also includes minor concrete curb and storm work, new pavement markings, and some minor landscaping repair.

Trail Construction

Trail rehabilitation will begin on the west side of Resources Road between 88 Avenue and 68 Avenue, and on the north side of 68 Avenue between Resources Road and Poplar Drive. This work includes 300 metres of asphalt overlay and 2,200 metres of a complete replacement of the trail structure.

It is anticipated that crews will operate from Monday to Saturday at all three construction sites, with work expected to be complete by mid-June.

Drivers are reminded to drive with caution near construction zones, obey all posted signage, and follow the direction of flag persons if present. All detours will be clearly marked, and the City appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding during this construction season.

Background Information

Asphalt overlay is a method used to prolong current infrastructure showing cracks and potholes, while still not being damaged enough to warrant a full rehabilitation.

In 2021, the City of Grande Prairie is investing over $35 million in projects that improve the road network, and $1 million in projects that improve the trail network. For more information on planned projects, visit the City’s website.
