On Tuesday, June 20, crews begin a full road reconstruction in the westbound lanes of 84 Avenue between 108 Street and 116 Street to better accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
By enhancing our roadways and planning for future traffic volumes, we bolster our city's economic preparedness and set the stage for continued growth.
Work on the project consists of asphalt milling, road structure replacement, concrete replacements, minor storm sewer repairs, roadway markings, crosswalk painting, line painting, and landscaping.
The westbound lanes will be split into two construction phases.
Phase 1 on 84 Avenue between 111A Street and 116 Street will be completed first, with the westbound traffic rerouted to the eastbound lanes at 111A Street. During this crossover, the two eastbound bound lanes will accommodate two-way traffic.
Phase 2, on 84 Avenue between 108 Street and 111A Street will see a similar crossover, with the westbound lanes providing two-way access for commuters.
Short-term road closures are expected, and roadway access will only be granted to local traffic. The speed limit is reduced to 30 km/hour during construction. Drivers are reminded to proceed with caution near construction zones, obey all posted signage, follow the direction of flag persons if present and anticipate potential traffic delays.
Pathway access on the south side of 84 Avenue is planned to be maintained during construction.
"Our community's long-term well-being is at the forefront of this road reconstruction project," said Jackie Clayton, Grande Prairie Mayor. "This investment will result in a more efficient and safer road network, we appreciate the patience and understanding of residents as we work to improve our community."
Construction is anticipated to be complete by mid-August, weather permitting.
Background Information:
In 2023, the City allocated approximately $10.95 million to enhance the road network. This includes road reconstruction, road overlay, and full-depth reclamation (FDR) projects, which collectively aim to enhance the overall quality and longevity of our roads.
