Applications are now open for the 2020-2021 Grande Prairie Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

YAC is open for 14-24 year olds of all experiences and backgrounds who want to inspire, effect change and have an impact on their community through advocacy and policy-making.

The goal of YAC is to directly connect youth representatives with Council, City boards and committees, and other community agencies in Grande Prairie. It provides an opportunity for youth to have input by engaging in community discussions around important events, policies, economic changes, infrastructure, etc. Members are encouraged to provide their input on the issues that matter to them while creating opportunities for more youth to be engaged and involved on community members.

“YAC is a unique opportunity for youth to get involved in the community, and work alongside Council on important community matters. Whether you’re just looking to gain some volunteer hours and meet new friends, or you’re interested in learning more about governance and gaining experience in advocacy and policy making, we encourage everyone to apply!” says Shubh Patel, Youth Advisory Council Member.

“The Youth Advisory Council plays an important role in Grande Prairie. As one of the youngest city’s in Canada, ensuring that our youth are represented in decision-making is a major priority for Council,” says Mayor Given. “This group has done tremendous work for our community since forming in 2010, and I look forward to meeting and working alongside the new members.”

Meetings take place a minimum of 4 times per year. Members can expect to commit approximately 4-5 hours a month. No previous experience is necessary to join, and youth of all backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply.
