The City of Grande Prairie’s new mobile skate park is now open to the public, currently located at the Hillside neighbourhood rink beside Hillside school.

The mobile skate park features portable skate equipment for beginner to intermediate level recreational skateboarding, BMX, scooters, or in-line skating.

The equipment will be used in outdoor spaces on a rotational basis throughout the community during the summer months. For the winter months, the equipment can be moved indoors for scheduled use in the activity centre.

The City is excited for the opening of the skate park as another way to promote physical activity, recreation and connectivity for children and youth throughout the community. It is anticipated to stay open outdoors this year through to mid-October, weather permitting.

Project Background

Council adopted a Skate park Master Plan in March 2020, with one of the recommendations of the plan being additional localized skate parks spread across the City for improved access and inclusivity, as well as indoor skate parks.  The mobile model allows for both indoor and parks being spread across the City while promoting active transportation, encouraging residents to bike, skateboard, or scooter as a form of transportation.

This project was made possible through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) to support active transportation, recreation, and emergency response. The City of Grande Prairie received approximately $4.9 million in federal funding through ICIP that supports select infrastructure projects in the City of Grande Prairie in 2021.
