The City of Grande Prairie is bringing back its one-day GirlZone event on Saturday, September 9.

GirlZone is an activity-based day for girls ages 10 to 15 to encourage them to try out new skills and recreational activities with their peers.

“Trends suggest there is a decreased participation rate of girls in recreation and sport activities since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this event aims to try and bridge that gap,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton. “Providing a barrier-free and non-judgmental space for girls to explore new activities contributes to creating an inclusive and caring community by encouraging gender equality in sport and recreation.”

The event takes place across multiple facilities from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and allows participants to try out the following activities in 50-minute sessions:

  • Cooking at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Glow dance with Girl Be You! at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Squash fundamentals at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Learn to play pickleball at the Eastlink Centre.
  • Soccer with Swan City FC at the St. Joe's Football Field.
  • Bike skills with Nitehawk at South Bear Creek Park.
  • Clay craft at South Bear Creek Pavilion.

Activities also include a presentation from a motivational speaker about various topics during the lunch break. Lunch is provided and the price is included in the program fee.

The registration cost is $20. Pre-register today by visiting cityofgp.com/programs.
