The City of Grande Prairie is encouraging residents to take part in Neighbour Day on Saturday, September 19 and do their part to build stronger relationships with others in their neighbourhoods and across the community.
“Now more than ever, initiatives like Neighbour Day are significant for our community,” says Mayor Bill Given.
“A connected community is a strong community. The pandemic has created a lot of rapid changes and adaptations for each and everyone of us, which makes staying connected of the greatest importance for our health and wellbeing as individuals and as a collective. I encourage everyone to use this day to reach out, introduce yourself to someone new, lend a helping hand, or complete a random act of kindness big or small to build those connections.”
Ideas on how to connect with neighbours and friends old and new while still following provincial health guidelines include:
- Having a socially distanced neighbourhood picnic at a local park
- Hosting a driveway or walkway decorating competition using sidewalk chalk
- Inviting neighbours over for a socially distanced coffee in a driveway
Scavenger Hunt Contest
Leading up to Neighbour Day, the City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association have teamed up to host a scavenger hunt though an interactive scavenger hunt app. The scavenger hunt begins on September 8 and ends 11:59 p.m. on September 19.
Participants will be able to indicate which neighbourhood they live in, and the neighbourhoods with the most points will be entered to win a free community picnic.

Good Neighbour Recognitions
The City of Grande Prairie is asking residents to acknowledge others who have provided assistance, a service or are just truly outstanding citizens. Good Neighbour Recognitions can be sent to goodneighbour@cityofgp.com with a brief description of what makes this individual a great neighbour. Submissions will be profiled on the City’s website and social media accounts and should be no more than 225 words.
