Delegations

  • Ian Kermack and Shane Mudryk presented to City Council as a delegation to provide an update on their plans to build on the old Park Hotel site.
  • Maureen Edomwonyi from the Grande Prairie Intercultural Association presented as a delegation to request funding for community events. Council directed administration to consider funding sources in the amount of $5000 and report back to the appropriate standing committee.

Correspondence

  • City Council received a response from the Alberta Minister of Health on a letter requesting data about ICU capacity and the cause of deaths in Grande Prairie over the last three years. They accepted the letter for information.
  • The Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus submitted a letter to the Minister of Health urging Alberta to recognize firefighters, RCMP, and municipal police as first-responders and make COVID-19 vaccine available to them. They accepted the letter for information.

COVID-19 Verbal Discussion

City Council discussed the current state of COVID-19 and the Rapid-Flow Vaccination Site located at Teresa Sargent Hall in the City of Grande Prairie. Council directed the Mayor to write a letter to the appropriate government officials requesting compensation to the City for costs associated with running the vaccination site.

Hughes Lake Energy Strategy

Council allocated $200,000 for administration to begin a pre-feasibility study to investigate both the technical and economic viability of energy systems for the Hughes Lake Area as well as explore the most prudent option to provide electricity and heat for industrial users.

Operating Surplus

City Council approved the transfer of the 2020 operating surplus of $2,369,000 to the Future Expenditures Reserve.

The surplus funds are allocated as follows: ICIP Ineligible Expenses, Recreation/Activity Centre, Hughes Lake Energy Study, and unrestricted.

July Tax Penalties waiver will be funded by financial stabilization.

2020 Audited Financial Statements

City Council approved the audited consolidated financial statements of the City of Grande Prairie for the year ended December 31, 2020.

Vehicle for Hire Bylaw

Council approved the Vehicle for Hire bylaw with an amendment to include provisions for vehicles for hire to be equipped with a GPS system able to hold data for at least 30 days, effective May 1, 2022.
