In Year 2 of Grande Prairie’s Five Year Plan to End Homelessness, we increased housing options, improved accountability and performance in the Housing First program and saw the beginnings of first-hand feedback from individuals with lived experience in homelessness. 

The City of Grande Prairie Homeless Initiatives has organized its efforts to end homelessness into four main goal areas, outlined in our Five Year Plan to End Homelessness: 2015-2019. Progress has been made in all four goal areas. 

In recent years Grande Prairie’s Homeless Initiative has addressed homelessness through the lens of Grande Prairie’s Five Year Plan to End Homeless, the provincial Plan for Alberta: Ending Homelessness in Ten Years (2009–19) and the federal Reaching Home Strategy. 

Grande Prairie’s 2021-23 Homelessness Strategy offers a set of Core Beliefs, Focus Areas and measurements for our community. The Strategy considers lessons learned, feedback from the community and ideas for the future. It also builds on our community’s proven ability to adapt and coordinate for the benefit of residents.

The City of Grande Prairie will be successful in ending homelessness by focusing on a multipronged approach, zeroing in on four priority goal areas.

This Multi-Year Plan, covering 2015–2019 provides not only a strategic framework for eliminating homelessness in Grande Prairie but a clear and concise Accountability Model.

As a young and vibrant city and a rapidly-growing economic and social centre in Northwestern Alberta, Grande Prairie faces its own unique set of opportunities and challenges. The task of understanding and responding to the social context of these is the responsibility of Community Social Development, under the guidance of Grande Prairie City Council and in cooperation with our community partners.

In 2004, Grande Prairie and District Multicultural Association (GPDMA) conducted a Community Consultation Needs Assessment Study.

In March 2013, members of the Seniors Interagency received a presentation regarding community mapping. A five phase process was outlined and members agreed it would guide the process. In March 2014, a committee was formed to map both the City and County.
