(Grande Prairie, Alta. – May 7, 2026) – In Grande Prairie, aging well is shaped by connection, community and the ways people continue to show up for one another over time. That spirit will be on full display June 1 as residents gather for the Aging Well Together: Seniors’ Week Celebration.
Presented by the City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie and Area Council on Aging, and co-hosted by the Government of Alberta, the free event takes place at The Bowes at Bonnetts Energy Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will mark Alberta’s official launch of Seniors’ Week.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of Seniors’ Week in Alberta, with June 1 recognized as Intergenerational Day. Together, they highlight the value of relationships across generations and the role they play in shaping everyday life in the community.
“We’re honoured to host the provincial launch of Seniors’ Week in partnership with the Government of Alberta,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “Together with the Grande Prairie and Area Council on Aging, this event reflects our commitment to support community empowerment and livability for people at every stage of life. Seniors’ Week is a time to celebrate, and we are looking forward to welcoming the whole community to be part of this special event.”
Throughout the day, residents of all ages can connect with local organizations, learn about supports available in the community and spend time together. The Seniors’ Information Fair will feature a range of service providers, followed by a free community BBQ lunch provided by the Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie and an afternoon of performances from local artists and cultural groups. The event is free to attend and no registration is required.
At the centre of the celebration is the Aging Well Together Community Art Showcase, inviting residents of all ages to share what aging well looks like from their perspective. Through painting, quilting, woodworking, photography and other forms of expression, the showcase creates space for personal stories and shared experiences.
Selected pieces will be featured at the event, where attendees can view the artwork and vote for their favourites. Prizes will be awarded for “People’s Choice” across categories and submissions close May 18. Residents are encouraged to take part.
The celebration is part of a broader lineup of Seniors’ Week activities across the region, including the Seniors’ Tea on June 3, hosted through local Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) partners.
The Aging Well Together: Seniors’ Week Celebration reflects a shared commitment across Grande Prairie and the region to support older adults and create opportunities for participation and involvement in community life.
