The City of Grande Prairie has begun its annual street sweeping operations, as crews transition from winter maintenance to spring clean-up across the community.
Sweeping starts on main arterial roads and high-traffic routes, where conditions dry first. Crews then move through collector and industrial roads before progressing into residential neighbourhoods later in the season.
Operations follow the same priority approach as the snow clearing program, beginning with Priority 1 routes and working through Priority 2 and 3 roads. Once a full city-wide rotation is complete, crews return to main routes to maintain conditions.
The program runs on two eight-hour shifts on weekdays and is weather dependent.
Crews use a combination of equipment and methods depending on location and conditions, including street sweepers, smaller units for boulevards and tight areas, water trucks to flush debris and a conveyor-style broom to collect heavier material from winter operations.
Debris collected includes sand, gravel and mud from winter maintenance. This material is transported to landfills, where it is repurposed as cover material.
In addition to roadways, crews will also be sweeping asphalt trails, Muskoseepi Park trails and grass medians along major corridors as conditions allow.
Residential street sweeping
Residential sweeping will begin later in the season once primary routes are complete. A service update will be shared when neighbourhood sweeping is set to begin.
Residential areas follow the same rotation used during the snow clearing program. The full schedule is available at cityofgp.com/road-maintenance.
What residents can expect
Sweepers move slowly, typically between 5 and 10 km/h. Motorists are asked to use caution and give crews space to work.
Timing may shift based on spring conditions.
How residents can help
Residents can support the program by:
