The City of Grande Prairie is beginning preparations for storm system upgrades in the Mission Estates area, part of ongoing capital construction to maintain and improve drainage infrastructure across the city.
The project involves replacing a section of storm sewer from 76 Avenue and 103 Street to the outfall at Bear River. These upgrades support long-term system performance and help reduce the risk of future issues that could impact slope stability and nearby properties.
As part of the upgrades, the storm sewer will be moved to a new alignment. This approach reduces impacts to nearby properties during construction and supports safer, more accessible maintenance in the future.
What to Expect
Construction is planned for later this year following procurement. In advance of that work, residents will begin to see early site preparation activity in the area.
Tree clearing on the slope near Mission Estates is scheduled to begin in early April and is expected to take approximately one to two weeks. This work prepares the site for construction and aligns with environmental requirements by occurring ahead of migratory bird nesting season.
Mulched tree material will remain on the slope following clearing. This helps protect the surface during spring conditions and reduces the risk of erosion prior to construction.
This work is separate from vegetation management activities related to fire prevention. While both may be visible at the same time, they serve different purposes. More information on vegetation management is available at cityofgp.com/vegmanagement.
To support safe operation of equipment, temporary trail closures will be in place at times. Detour signage will direct pedestrians and closures will be limited to partial days where possible.
Once the project is complete, a new asphalt trail connection will link 75A Avenue to the Muskoseepi trail system, improving access and connectivity in the area.
